#16362, Three Recent Developments in Mechanical Testing: 1/ 10N High Resolution Load Cell, 2/DIC Closed Loop Control, & 3/Tomography Radiograph Software Post-processor
With 400mV/V sensitivity, the 10N HiRes load cell effectively covers the range of a 20g strain gauge alternative for uTS load-frame. The fixed cross head, sensor, and grip bracket are precision wire-edmed from a single block of high-strength aluminum, resulting in easy alignment, high bending moment rigidity, and a high safety factor.
Easily implementable DIC is limited to relatively slow sensor update rates. Psylotech leverages nested control loops with a 4kHz position loop. Smooth motion is achieved by updating the position loop setpoint at form a 10Hz DIC update rate. The result is effective for quasi-static ramps and stress relaxation, where local strain control is important.
Psylotech’s rotating load train X-ray tomography universal xTS load frame is being used for sub-micron resolution scans. However, even the highest precision cross roller bearings contribute 2.5 micron runout. Besides runout, aligning both top and bottom rotation axes has proven complicated. In collaboration with Brian Bay of Oregon State University, a radiograph correction software is being developed to adjust the radiographs, aligning them appropriately before reconstruction.
