#17314–ABCs of LDVs: Beginner Level Introduction to Laser Doppler Vibrometry
The use of laser Doppler vibrometers at IMAC is ubiquitous thanks to the progress in the field over past few decades. However, there is still a knowledge gap between a new grad starting her/his professional career and the amount of practical knowhow about this non-contact vibration measurement technique. There may also be some hesitance in asking about a topic that “everyone” seems to know. It is the goal of this tutorial to demystify vibrometry and explain it with no assumptions on prior knowledge on the topic. The presentation and hands-on experience, that is meant to be interactive will cover the following topics:
- What is laser Doppler vibrometry?
- Type of vibrometers.
- Where is it currently used? Why?
- When is it a good tool to use and when is it not?
- What is the current state of technology?
Hands-on experiments:
1. Single point vibrometer measuring the frequency and amplitude of a tuning fork. With this experiment, we will demonstrate the effect of mass loading.
2. Scanning vibrometer setup for deflection shape measurements on a cantilevered beam. The goal of this experiment is to introduce the attendee to full-field vibration measurements, basics of scanning LDV, pointers on choosing the right version (1D or 3D) of the system and data export to external software.
